Why 400 GSM matters in Kenyan weather
A sealed sheet, not a mesh
Standard 70% or 90% shade nets are knitted with gaps — they cool a space but rain goes straight through. This is a closed, laminated HDPE sheet coated on both faces: the shading of a shade net with the sealing of a tarpaulin.
Heavy-duty class
400 GSM is the weight used for permanent car park canopies, market roofs and long walkways — higher tear resistance, better wind stability, longer life under strong UV.
One continuous 50 m run
No joins along its span, 3 m wide. Covers ten to twelve car bays in a line, a 50 m walkway, a long greenhouse section or a boundary rain screen — with no seam sealing mid-run.

Buying tip: GSM is the most useful number when comparing waterproof shade nets. If a supplier only says “heavy duty”, ask for the weight per m². A 150 m² roll at 400 GSM should weigh close to 60 kg — weighing the roll is the quickest honest check.

Most shade net failures are installation problems — follow these and the sheet lasts for years.
Plan & prepare
Measure and plan the slope
Set fixing points so the sheet falls at least 1 in 20 across the 3 m width — a minimum 150 mm drop.
A flat fix ponds water — just 20 mm over 150 m² is about three tonnes of loadAllow slack for tensioning
Set anchor points 150 – 250 mm beyond the sheet edges so ropes and turnbuckles have room to pull.
Never plan for the sheet to reach edge to edge with no rope runPrepare the frame
Fix eye bolts, hook bolts or purlin clamps at about 1 m centres. Tape over sharp edges, bolt threads and weld beads.

Unroll on a calm morning
Unroll the 50 m length on clean ground, check for transit damage, then lift into place.
Use 4 – 6 people: a 60 kg sheet catching wind at height is dangerous with too few handsFix the four corners first

🧽 Cleaning
Plain water and a soft brush, or mild soap. Never thinner, petrol, diesel, acetone or a wire brush — solvents attack the lamination.
🔍 Inspection
Check eyelets, corners and seams each rainy season. Patch small tears on both faces with PE repair tape — a 20 mm tear can become 2 m in one windy night.
📦 Storage
Only store when fully dry. Fold loosely, keep in shade, off the ground and away from rodents.
✂️ Cutting to size
Use a sharp or hot knife, fold the edge back 40 – 50 mm, double stitch, and fit new eyelets before tensioning.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 400GSM green shade net really 100% waterproof?
Yes. Unlike an open-weave 70% or 90% shade net, this fabric is laminated and coated so no water passes through the sheet body. The only possible entry points are stitched seams and eyelet holes, which is why the installation guide places them on the high side of the slope.
How many square metres does a 50m x 3m roll cover?
150 m² — roughly ten to twelve car bays in a line, a 50 m covered walkway, a long greenhouse roof section, or a 50 m boundary screen.
How long will it last in the Kenyan sun?
Three to five years outdoors with correct tensioning. The UV stabiliser is compounded into the yarn, so it doesn't wash off. What shortens life is flapping, ponded water and abrasion on sharp frame edges — all installation issues.
What slope should I give the net so water drains?
A minimum fall of 1 in 20 — about 5%, or a 150 mm drop across the 3 m width. Anything flatter holds water, forms a pond and eventually tears the eyelets out.
Can I cut the roll to a smaller size?
Yes. Cut with a sharp or hot knife, fold the edge back 40 – 50 mm, double stitch it and fit new eyelets. A raw edge left unfinished will fray and tear in wind.
Does it come in colours other than green?
Green is stocked as standard. Green/silver and green/black, plus sizes such as 25 m × 3 m and 50 m × 4 m, are available on order. Call 0741 042484 to check stock.
Can it be used as a greenhouse cover for growing plants?
Only where full block-out is wanted — drying sheds, curing rooms, stores or hardening-off areas. It stops 100% of light, so it is not suitable over growing crops. For those, use our 70% or 90% knitted shade nets.
